To begin the City Tour, we will meet at Plaza de Armas at 12:30 PM to start our visit to the religious, architectural, and historical complexes that the ancient city of Cusco has to offer.
DAY 5 / JUNE 19: FULL DAY SACRED VALLEY
Tour Description:
We will meet at 07:00 AM to begin our journey from Cusco to the town of Chinchero, where our tour will officially start.
Chinchero is home to twelve indigenous communities that have preserved aspects of the traditional Ayllu social organization, though it has evolved since the Spanish conquest. These communities still follow the Tahuantinsuyo governance system and directly appoint their highest authority, the Varayoc.
Additionally, Chinchero is one of the few places where the traditional bartering system (known as trueque) is still practiced in its local markets.
Located west of Cusco at an altitude of 3,300 meters above sea level, Maras offers a breathtaking view of the Urubamba mountain range and the snow-capped peaks of La Verónica (5,682 m.a.s.l.) and Chikón (5,530 m.a.s.l.). Its historical significance began when Incan nobles were displaced from their palaces in Qosqo and were forced to resettle in smaller towns, such as Maras. The town features a church built with adobe, characteristic of rural religious architecture. Inside, it houses paintings from the Cusco School of Art.
Located 7 km southwest of Maras, Moray is a unique archaeological site in the region. It consists of giant natural depressions in the ground, which the Incas adapted into circular agricultural terraces with irrigation channels. This site functioned as an advanced agricultural laboratory, allowing the Incas to experiment with crops at different microclimates. Thanks to innovations like these, the ancient Andean civilizations contributed around 60% of the world's agricultural products, including over 1,500 varieties of potatoes, 150 types of corn, and many other crops.
Known as the Salt Mines, this site is northwest of Maras and consists of around 3,000 small salt pools, each averaging 5 m². During the dry season, these pools are filled every three days with naturally salty water from a mountain spring. As the water evaporates, the salt crystallizes and is later harvested, ground, and packaged for distribution. Today, this salt is iodized, making it safe for consumption.
Next, we will head to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca city still inhabited today. This site was a multifunctional complex in the time of the Tahuantinsuyo, serving as an agricultural, administrative, social, religious, and military center. Nestled between towering mountains, Ollantaytambo is watched over by Tunupa, an eternal guardian of the region.
MACHUPICCHU CONNECTION
After the tour of the Sacred Valley, we head to the train station to board the train at 7:04 PM, which will take us to the town of Aguas Calientes. We will spend the night there so that the next day, we can wake up early and head to the Machu Picchu archaeological site, following prior coordination with the travel agent and the assigned guide.
DAY 6 / JUNE 20: FULL DAY MACHU PICCHU
Tour Description:
On this day, we will start very early to meet with our assigned guide, who will be waiting for you to begin the journey.
We will take a 25-minute bus ride to the Llaqta of Machu Picchu, where we will explore the breathtaking Inca citadel, learning about its history, architecture, and cultural significance.
DAY 7 / JUNE 21: RAINBOW MOUNTAIN
04:00 am - 04:30 am or 06:00 am - 06:30 am – We will pick you up from your hotel (around the historic center) and head south of Cusco for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes until we reach the Cusipata district, where we will enjoy a delicious breakfast.
We will then continue on an unpaved road until we arrive at Kayrahuire Alto (4,450 m.a.s.l.), a private property and our starting point. Here, we will prepare for the adventure, receiving a brief instruction on how to operate the ATVs from our guide. You will have time for practice in a designated area before starting the 50-minute to 1-hour ride (round trip). Running is strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
Throughout the journey, you will enjoy stunning landscapes, breathtaking views of the majestic Apu Ausangate glacier, and encounters with local people dressed in traditional attire.
We will then park our ATVs a few minutes away from Rainbow Mountain, and take a short 3 to 5-minute walk to reach the breathtaking natural wonder. You will have around 40 minutes to explore, take photos, and admire the view before heading back.
After descending on the ATVs (30 minutes), we will board our vehicle and return to Cusipata for lunch. Finally, we will travel back to Cusco (1 hour and 30 minutes approx.), ending the day's adventure.
DAY 8 / JUNE 22: HUMANTAY LAKE
After picking you up from your hotel between 4:30 – 5:00 am, we will begin our adventure to Humantay Lake. Our private transportation will take us to the Mollepata plaza, where we will have our first stop to enjoy a nutritious breakfast and gather energy for the hike. Here, you will also have the opportunity to purchase essentials such as water, snacks, sunscreen, and fruit.
Next, we will continue our journey to Soraypampa (3,850 m.a.s.l.), the starting point of our hike. From here, we will begin our ascent to Humantay Lake (4,200 m.a.s.l. / 13,779 feet), enjoying breathtaking panoramic views. If the sky is clear, we will also witness the majestic snow-capped Salkantay and Humantay mountains.
The hike lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and is classified as easy to moderate. However, the stunning scenery makes every step worthwhile. For those who prefer, horse rentals are available on-site.
Once at Humantay Lake, a certified tour guide will provide insights about the area's history, significance, and ecological importance. You will have plenty of time to take photos and appreciate the breathtaking natural beauty of the region.
After soaking in the views, we will begin our descent back to Soraypampa, which will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and is significantly easier.
