Go with Jose´s rules on gathering around and on leading the flock (pointing out birds in a large flock). José Antonio is real clear about his ability to get the group on more rare or difficult to find or new birds. Trust him, as it will pay off.
Never rush in to see a bird if folks are gathered around José Antonio. You may scare off a rarity that others have been patient to get. That being said, you all are a small group. Thus, when José Antonio encourages you all to gather round, I suggest you gather round. Your diligence and patience will often be rewarded.
At several locations, tripods (for photographic equipment) can crowd the trails. That being said, bring along 1 or 2 scopes makes sense, as the whole group has more of an opportunity to enjoy some good birds. José always carries a scope (or nearly always) and go with his direction on what make sense for a second scope.
Note: The pacing of the trip and photography needs to be worked out. Generally, a fast photographer will not have any problem. Slower paced photographers will likely have to sacrifice some birding opportunities in order to get the perfect shot.
Daily Wake Up Plans: When birding anywhere in the world, an early wake up is often necessary to begin bird watching at dawn. With drives ranging from right outside the door of the lodge to down the road by as much as 60 minutes (on a few days), the group needs to build consensus every day on the wake up and launch plans. The host’s leadership will be necessary here and listening to Jose´s recommendations is always a good idea. On a few days, the group may have some flexibility with some persons sleeping in later as other bird at or near the lodge before breakfast.
Offer to change seats on the van on a daily basis.
Please consider passing around tipping envelope at each meal to assure the food service and lodging staff get adequate tips. Though meals are included in the price of the lodge, please consider tipping the food service and lodging staff. Never forget to tip lodging staff for box breakfasts and box lunches as staff are often working late and up early to assure these meals are prepared. Spreading the economic impact of ecotourism is good for the people and good for the birds.
Plan amongst yourselves how to arrange the tip to the driver and bird guide at the end of the trip. You can do this individually (what I recommend) or as a group.
