BirdSightings Perú

By José Antonio Padilla Reyes
Discover one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles in the Peruvian Amazon: the Macaw Clay Lick of Tambopata.
Located within the Tambopata National Reserve in Madre de Dios, this exposed clay-bank draws hundreds of macaws and parrots every morning to feed on mineral-rich earth.
Why do they do it? These birds seek essential minerals like sodium — which are scarce in the rainforest — helping their diet and survival.
The best time to witness this phenomenon is at dawn: large flocks gather at the cliff face, creating a vivid display of color and sound, then fly off in formation into the trees.
Visiting this clay lick isn’t just a visual treat — it’s a chance to connect with the jungle, respect nature, and support the conservation of one of the planet’s richest ecosystems. 🌿🕊️
